Remembrance of Allah
The Qur'an often reminds us to keep remembrance of Allah at all times.
Certainly this is quite a challenge for us forgetful humans, but the merits of
remembrance are so great that we must strive for continual remembrance of Allah
in every moment.
The following verses, as translated by Yusuf Ali, are examples of what the
Qur'an says about remembrance:
Recite what is sent of the Book by inspiration to thee and establish Regular
Prayer: for Prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; and remembrance of
Allah is the greatest (thing in life) without doubt. And Allah knows the (deeds)
that ye do. 29:45
"Go thou and thy brother with My Signs and slacken not either of you in
keeping Me in remembrance 20:42
If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious We
appoint for him an evil one to be an intimate companion to him. 43:36
By men whom neither traffic nor merchandise can divert from the Remembrance of
Allah nor from regular Prayer nor from the practice of regular Charity: their
(only) fear is for the Day when hearts and eyes will be transformed (in a world
wholly new) 24:37
Those who fear Allah when a thought of evil from satan assaults them bring Allah
to remembrance when lo! they see (aright)! 7:201
And do thou (O reader!) bring thy Lord to remembrance in thy (very) soul with
humility and in reverence without loudness in words in the mornings and
evenings; and be not thou of those who are unheedful. 7:205
"Those who believe and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of
Allah: for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find
satisfaction. 13:28
Has not the time arrived for the Believers that their hearts in all humility
should engage in the remembrance of Allah and of the truth which has been
revealed (to them) and that they should not become like those to whom was given
Revelation aforetime but long ages passed over them and their hearts grew hard?
57:16
And keep thy soul content with those who call on their Lord morning and evening
seeking his Face; and let not thine eyes pass beyond them seeking the pomp and
glitter of this Life; nor obey any whose heart We have permitted to neglect the
remembrance of Us one who follows his own desires whose case has gone beyond all
bounds. 18:28
O ye who believe! when the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the Day of
Assembly) hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah and leave off business
(and traffic): that is best for you if ye but knew! 62:9
O ye who believe! let not your riches or your children divert you from the
remembrance of Allah. If any act thus the loss is their own. 63:9
Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants
and gambling and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer: will
ye not then abstain? 5:91
... those who believe work righteousness engage much in the remembrance of
Allah... 26:227
The Evil One has got the better of them: So he has made them lose the
remembrance of Allah. They are the Party of the Evil One. Truly it is the Party
of the Evil One that will perish! 58:19
O ye who believe! when ye meet a force be firm and call Allah in remembrance
much (and often); that ye may prosper. 8:45
The Hypocrites they think they are over-reaching Allah but He will over-reach
them: when they stand up to prayer they stand without earnestness to be seen of
men but little do they hold Allah in remembrance. 4:142
keep in remembrance the name of the Lord and devote thyself to Him
wholeheartedly. 73:8
but if any turns away from the remembrance of his Lord He will cause him to
undergo a severe Penalty. 72:17
Seest thou not that Allah sends down rain from the sky and leads it through
springs in the earth? Then He causes to grow therewith produce of various
colors: then it withers; thou wilt see it grow yellow; then He makes it dry up
and crumble away. Truly in this is a Message of remembrance to men of
understanding. 39:21
